3D Sound Intensity streamlines

Contrary to common belief, sound waves don’t propagate in straight lines. In the cabin, obstructions like seats or narrowing aisles because of lavatories influence the curvatures of the sound waves. Usually an extremely complex sound field is present because of the many different scattering and absorbing surfaces. Sound intensity is a vector value which has both a magnitude and direction. Using a 3D USP probe the sound vector field can be visualized and mapped. The results demonstrate that even with a single sound source, the 3D intensity streamlines are strongly bending, suggesting that far field techniques do not point towards the sound source.
